Healthcare in Cyprus is provided through the General Healthcare System (GeSY), as well as through public and private medical institutions.

For people planning to relocate and live in Cyprus, it is useful to understand whether they are eligible for GeSY, how to select a Personal Doctor, where relevant medical facilities are located, and whether additional private medical insurance may be appropriate.

Access to healthcare services and the applicable costs depend on the individual's status, eligibility for GeSY, the healthcare provider selected, and the type of medical service required.

The GeSY Healthcare System

GeSY, the General Healthcare System, is the national healthcare system of the Republic of Cyprus and is administered by the Health Insurance Organisation.

The system provides eligible registered beneficiaries with access to healthcare through participating doctors, specialists, medical facilities, laboratories, pharmacies, and other healthcare providers.

Eligibility for GeSY is determined by law and by the individual's status. Owning property or simply residing in Cyprus does not by itself automatically provide entitlement to healthcare through GeSY.

Registering with GeSY

To access GeSY healthcare services, an eligible person must enrol in the GHS Beneficiary Registry and register on the list of a Personal Doctor.

Registration requires the individual's details to be recorded in the relevant government registries, such as the Civil Registry, Migration Department and, where applicable, Social Insurance Services.

The Health Insurance Organisation may request additional documentation or evidence to confirm eligibility.

Personal Doctor

The Personal Doctor is a central part of the GeSY system. Following enrolment, a beneficiary selects a doctor and registers on that doctor's beneficiary list.

A Personal Doctor provides primary healthcare and, where appropriate, may refer the patient to specialists, laboratory and diagnostic services, and other healthcare providers within the system.

Personal Doctors for Children are available for younger beneficiaries, with specific rules applying to adolescents regarding registration with a doctor for children or adults.

Specialist Doctors

Within GeSY, a beneficiary may access an outpatient specialist through a referral from a Personal Doctor or another healthcare provider authorised by the system.

The system also allows direct access to certain specialist services. In some circumstances, accessing a specialist without a referral involves the applicable personal contribution.

Access arrangements vary according to the medical service, so current GeSY requirements should be checked before arranging specialist treatment.

Public and Private Medical Facilities

Cyprus has public hospitals, private hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres, and individual medical practices.

An important distinction is not simply whether a facility is public or private, but whether the individual doctor or healthcare provider participates in GeSY and whether the required service is provided within the system.

Patients may also obtain healthcare privately outside GeSY. In such cases, the terms and charges are determined by the relevant healthcare provider.

Private Medical Insurance

Private medical insurance may be relevant for people who are not eligible for GeSY, as well as for those who wish to use additional private healthcare services in accordance with the terms of their insurance policy.

Coverage, exclusions, limits, waiting periods, healthcare networks, and payment arrangements vary significantly between insurance products.

The terms of the individual policy should be reviewed carefully and, where appropriate, discussed with a licensed insurance professional.

Emergency Medical Care

Emergency medical care is provided through the relevant emergency services and Accident & Emergency Departments.

Within GeSY, beneficiaries have direct access to Accident & Emergency Departments in cases of accidents and medical emergencies.

When relocating to Cyprus, it can be useful to identify the nearest hospital or emergency department in relation to the chosen place of residence.

Pharmacies and Medication

Cyprus has an extensive network of pharmacies. Certain medicines are available to GeSY beneficiaries through prescriptions issued within the system, in accordance with the applicable rules and covered medicines.

Anyone who regularly takes specific medication may wish to check its availability in Cyprus, whether a local prescription is required, and whether appropriate alternatives are available before relocating.

Healthcare for Children

Families with children may wish to consider access to a paediatrician, nearby medical facilities, and emergency departments when choosing an area in which to live.

Children who are GeSY beneficiaries are registered with the appropriate Personal Doctor in accordance with the age rules of the system.

Families relocating from another country may also wish to consider the transfer of children's medical records, vaccination information, and other relevant medical documentation.

Healthcare When Choosing an Area to Live

For most everyday situations, proximity to a medical facility is not the only consideration when choosing a property, but access to healthcare infrastructure may be particularly important for some families.

Where relevant, it is useful to consider the actual travel time to a hospital, Personal Doctor, paediatrician, specialist, or other healthcare facility that may be required regularly.

This may be particularly important for families with young children, older people, and those who require regular medical care.
